TEMA, The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats

About the Project

The Tree Fellowship Project has been implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education since 2016.  It’s a nature education project carried out with the support of volunteer charity runners.

Scope/Goals

The project aims to increase primary school children's experiential knowledge of nature, to familiarize them with concepts such as ecosystem, endemic plants and biodiversity, to enable them to observe the process of growing seeds and to raise awareness on "Forest Ecosystem and Biodiversity". The project also contributes to the fight against erosion through the "Hayrettin Karaca Tree Fellowship Memorial Forests" that are created within the project.

Activities

Educational Activities

Within the scope of the project, educational content and materials have been developed for primary school children to raise awareness about relationships in nature, forest ecosystem, seed growing and observation, biodiversity and endemic plants.

Practices are carried out with short-term activities that include educational materials prepared for primary school children such as posters, presentations, observation notebooks, observation boxes, leaf wheels and tree cards . In addition, the project aims to enable children to grow their saplings from seeds specific to their region and to experience the plant growing process.

What Have We Done So Far?

With the project, approximately 45.000 children in 81 provinces of Turkey were reached in 7 years. In total 7 memorial forests were created:  2016 and 2018 in Çanakkale Biga, 2017 in Balıkesir Bandırma, 2019 and 2020 in Edirne, 2021 in Eskişehir and 2022 in Sivas. Approximately 90.000 saplings were planted in the 7 memorial forests, 45.000 of which were saplings grown by the children as a part of the project. Our  7.904 volunteer runners, who run for charity and pursue a good cause , have contributed to the Tree Fellowship Project by raising a total of TL 5.841.423  so far.

You can support the project by participating in charity marathons. You can find the details here.
